YOGYAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — Students Study Program electrical engineering, Faculty of engineering, State University of Yogyakarta, Fredy Setya Pradana, creating tools for detecting or knowing the parameters of ozone levels.
"Tool that uses a sensor MQ-131 as ozone levels of gas detectors that monitor the level of functioning of air pollution to determine ozone pollution index in each area," said Fredy, in Yogyakarta, Friday (22/3/2013).
According to him, it will work if the sensor get stimulation of ozone gas that led to the change of voltage and resistance in the sensor.
Furthermore, it would be the input voltage on systems that have been hard-wired and shown to the LCD to find out how big the gas levels in the environment area with units of ppb.
"The system will conclude the gas levels in normal conditions or hazards. If the source of the gas ozone showed a magnitude 121-2000 ppb, the LCD will display the condition of ' danger ', "he said.
He said, at this stage of the testing carried out measurements of the gas ozone levels in some places, the lowlands and the Highlands, such as Yogyakarta, Tambi Wonosobo, and Dieng.
"Once the experiment takes about 20 seconds until the appointment of stable or stop moving, and from these experiments can be drawn the conclusion that the higher the area somewhere, the less gas ozonnya levels," he said.
According to him, it's understandable because in the Highlands there is not much industrial centers and the use of motor vehicles is also still quite low. In addition, the number of trees in the area of the plateau is also a differentiator factor of low levels of ozone gas.
"It's different from Conditions in Yogyakarta, which has been solid with a motor vehicle and industrial activity is quite high," said Fredy, who created the tool under the guidance of professors of electrical engineering faculty of Engineering Education UNY Herlambang Sigit Pramono.
He said, ozone protects the Earth from the useful beam of ultraviolet radiation of the Sun where the layers are at a height of 8-50 km above the Earth's surface.
However, the presence of ozone around the surface of the Earth with a particular concentration would harm human health such as infection and airway irritation or even can damage the lungs.
"Ozone can occur naturally in the smog (mist) especially in the big cities where NOx and hydrocarbon gases from motor vehicle exhaust fumes and industrial activities are a source of ozone forming carrier," he said.
